さくらまつり Research

こんばんはみなさん(everyone)、

With the upcoming さくらまつり (桜祭り, sakura festival), I decided to research the significance behind this event.

Cherry blossoms are among Japan's national flowers and have great symbolic resonance. Sakura symbolize the intensity and ephemerality of life. This is a concept embodied by the concept of 物の哀れ:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_no_aware They recur as a motif throughout Japanese media, from video games, to anime, to songs.

The general name of the practice of flower viewing is はなみ (花見, flower viewing). While we are familiar with the さくら (桜, cherry blossom), an older form of はなみ is うめ (梅, plum blossom). On these occasions, many choose to gather with friends and enjoy games, music, food, drink and company beneath the trees. If 桜 viewing is done at night, it's called よざくら (夜桜, night sakura).

The Japanese Meteorological Agency tracks the blooms each year to observe trends in seasonal temperatures. Local news offers nightly weather forecasts to the public, which is used to plan festivities. The March 29th 2018 forecast from the Japanese Meteorological Corporation (日本気象株式会社) can be found at: https://n-kishou.com/corp/news-contents/sakura/news2018.html?lang=en
